Mid-Range Portland Maine Hotels
More Affordable Options For
Staying In Portland Maine
Portland Maine hotels can be expensive, especially in the peak seasons of summer and early fall. But there are a few good options that you can check
out to make your stay in Portland more affordable. (Keep in mind that visiting Portland in the off seasons can be great fun since the city has so much
to offer year round and all the hotels in Portland Maine offer reduced rates in the winter and spring.)
West of downtown Portland, very close to the town of Westbrook, is the Howard Johnson Plaza Portland at 155 Riverside Street. Located about 10-15 minutes
from downtown (driving), this hotel will cost you around $160 a night in the peak season. With a pool, hot tub and exercise room, it is a good value. The rooms
are good sized and clean. The highway is easy to access.
Another decent option in this price range (around $160 per night in the high season, much cheaper at other times of the year), is the La Quinta Inn and Suites
at 340 Park Ave. This area of town is okay - it is close to Hadlock Field where the Portland Seadogs (a minor league baseball team that is affiliated with
the Boston Red Sox) play and there are a few fast food type places around
it. You'll drive about 5-10 minutes to get to the Old Port.
The hotel offers a decent continental breakfast, clean rooms and an outdoor pool, but it's nothing fancy.
(During the summer I would rather pay this kind of money and stay in a much nicer hotel in South Portland or Scarborough, which are still only about a 15
minute drive away.)
Using services like Priceline.com can also get you a room in Portland at a reasonable rate. Very often, you can get a room at the Eastland Park Hotel in downtown
for pretty cheap. If you don't mind letting the service choose your hotel for you, you might want to give naming your own price a try.
There are some good options for nice, moderately priced South Portland Maine hotels that would also
be only a 10-15 minute drive into downtown Portland. South Portland offers a large mall and many shopping options as well as some good restaurants. Be sure
to check out the area as alternative to staying right in Portland itself.
Looking to stay near the Portland Maine airport? There are a couple nice hotels right near the airport - The Embassy Suites and the Hilton
Garden Inn Portland Airport. During the summer they can run you upwards of $240 a night, but during the off season they are quite affordable.
If you have a big family, it might be worth checking out the Embassy Suites even in the summer as you can get a suite that will fit everyone nicely without having to
book 2 hotel rooms. My family and I stayed at the Embassy Suites in April for only $105 per night, which included a great full breakfast for 6 people! The
rooms were nice and clean and they have a pool, hot tub, sauna and workout room. The drive to the Old Port is only about 10-15 minutes and you are also very close to
the mall and shopping in South Portland.
