Peaks Island Maine

Spend A Day On This Beautiful Casco Bay Island

Once known as the "Coney Island of Maine", Peaks Island Maine is a great day trip from Portland. Located in Casco Bay just 3 miles off the coast of Portland, Peaks Island is a quick (and beautiful) 20 minute ferry ride from the mainland.

Peaks Island Maine

While there is so much to do in Portland itself, one of the best things is island hopping to some of the many islands in Casco Bay. It's a great way to see the sights and each island has its own special qualities.

Peaks Island Maine - Casco Bay Lines Ferry

Peaks Island is a year-round community, but the population swells in the high season with summer residents and tourists alike. If it sounds like fun to you, hop aboard the Casco Bay Lines ferry for $7.70 per adult, $3.85 per kid. While you don't really need your car on the island, you can bring your bike (which is a great idea), it'll be an additional $6.50 for adults and $3.25 for kids. You can also rent bikes on the island.

Quick tip: If you are going to take the ferry on a sunny weekend day, plan ahead to get there early. You'll need to get a parking space and sometimes the parking garage by the ferry terminal can get full. If that happens you'll have to park further away and walk. Lines can be long on the busy days so give yourself plenty of time to park and get in line for the ferry.

What to do when you get there?

Peaks Island Maine Bike Riding

One of the best things to do on Peaks Island Maine is either walking or biking the Peaks Island Loop. Approximately 4 miles long, this loop will take you around the island where you'll see some beautiful views of the bay and Atlantic Ocean. Alternatively, you could take a walking or golf cart tour of the island to learn about its colorful history.

Stop for a picnic lunch at any picturesque vantage point or small beach or have lunch at one of the restaurants on the island. There are some shops and galleries for a little light shopping. They have a unique shop of umbrella covers - bet you've never seen that before!

Peaks Island Maine Jones Landing

If you happen to be there on a Sunday, stop by Jone's Landing for their Reggae Sundays. It tends to be a young crowd but the music is good and it's a fun, laid-back atmosphere on a nice summer day.

Peaks Island Maine Lodging

If you're looking to stay on Peak's Island, there are a couple of Bed and Breakfast type inns. The Inn on Peaks Island (www.innonpeaks.com) and the Peaks Island House (www.thepeaksislandhouse.com) are only a few minutes walk from the ferry terminal. They both offer modest accomodations and dining with stunning views.

There are several vacation rentals on Peaks Island as well. For a longer stay, you get to enjoy a taste of island living and can take several quick and easy day trips to the mainland for shopping, dining and entertainment.

Peaks Island Maine Weather Rock

Peaks Island Maine is fun to explore on a warm summer day or in the fall when the foliage is at its peak. Spend a few hours or a whole day (or even longer!) and then hop the ferry back to Portland for a great dinner at one of its outstanding restaurants. There's almost no better way to spend the day on the coast of Maine!
