Affordable Vacations In Maine For The Whole Family!
Cheap family vacations can be had in Maine, you just have to plan extremely well! Luckily for you, I've taken a lot of the hours of research and digging out of the equation because I've done it all and I'm here to share it with you. With our family of six, finding cheap or free things to do in Maine has become a necessity for us! Take it from me, you really can have memorable, yet affordable vacations in Maine.
What are the key ingredients in cheap family vacations?
This page will cover these topics for each major region of the state, but first, let's take a look at some general ideas to begin your planning process.
Planning Your Affordable Vacations In Maine
There are definitely some important choices that you'll make when planning cheap family vacations that will have a big impact on the bottom line. The first one is the time of year that you will go on vacation. Maine is a beautiful state with much to offer in all seasons, but of course, summer is the most popular time of year for tourists.
If you are looking to have a vacation in Maine for less money, consider coming in the spring, fall or even winter. Hotel rates are often times drastically less in the off season, allowing you to keep more money in your pocket. True, there may be less to do in the off seasons but many of the free attractions in Maine are beautiful and available year round.
And of course, the length of your vacation makes a big difference too. Maybe you can't stay a full week, but even a quick 4-day trip is often enough to rest, relax and make some great memories with the kids.
Sometimes staying just outside of your main destination, makes lodging more affordable. Yes, you may have to do a bit more driving to get to the attractions, but it might be well worth it when you save a bunch of money on a hotel.
If you totally have your heart set on a Maine summer vacation, but funds are tight, consider camping in Maine instead of staying in a pricey hotel. If you are reasonably set up for it (you have a tent and some sleeping bags, at least), it is a very cost effective way to enjoy cheap family vacations in Maine.
Many of the most popular Maine vacation spots have great campgrounds in town or very close by, letting you enjoy restaurants and attractions while paying a quarter or less of what you'd pay for a hotel room. Camping also lends itself to cookouts, which saves on food costs as well. Bring a big pot with you, pick up some lobsters and steamer clams from a local lobster pound and cook 'em up yourself over the fire. You can't get a better, less expensive lobster dinner!
If you're looking for the "traditional" vacation - hotel, restaurants, activities and tourist attractions - keep on reading to discover ways to have cheap family vacations in Maine...
Cheap Family Vacations in Downeast Maine
I know for sure that you can have an affordable family vacation in Downeast Maine because that's what my family did this year. There's so much to do and see with Acadia National Park and many other natural attractions that you and your whole family will want to return again and again.
A few of the motels and hotels that are highlighted on the cheap Bar Harbor hotels page are appropriate for families and make staying in or near Bar Harbor quite affordable. There is also the Twilight Motel in Ellsworth that families enjoy for very low rates.
You can certainly spend a lot of money in Bar Harbor and all the other beautiful areas in Downeast Maine, but you also vacation there very cheaply. Outdoor activities abound and if you are able to travel with equipment like bikes or kayaks or just a good pair of hiking boots, you and your whole family can have lots of fun and adventure for very little money.
Food doesn't have to cost a lot either if you get creative or plan to make some or all of your own food in a cottage or motel kitchenette or on a grill. I'll let you know what I found for affordable restaurants too.
Cheap Family Vacations in Mid-Coast Maine
Mid-coast Maine conjures up images of dramatic rocky coastlines, charming lighthouses and picturesque harbor villages filled with artwork inspired by the beauty of coastal Maine. Towns like Boothbay Harbor, Rockland and Camden may draw the most tourists, but there are many, many more beautiful little towns that would make for a memorable vacation.
While the mid-coast region is NOT my top pick for affordable vacationing with the family, if you do enough research, you can craft a family vacation that won't leave you with an empty wallet.
The best, cheapest family vacations in mid-coast Maine just might be camping at on one of over 20 campgrounds in the area. But if that's not your cup of tea, let's see what we can find for affordable hotels that will fit a family, the best places to eat and cheapest things to do.
Rather than staying right in the most popular towns, why not stay in one of the smaller towns where lodging is generally more affordable? No matter where you choose to stay, all of the area is easily accessible for exciting day trips.
Cheap Family Vacations in the Greater Portland Maine Area
The Greater Portland area which includes Portland, South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough, Freeport, Yarmouth and Falmouth, is a wonderful part of the state to visit on vacation. Portland, Maine's largest city, offers spectacular restaurants, cultural activities, shopping and lots to do and the rest of the surrounding communities all have special, not-to-be-missed parts too. But can you vacation here with a family without breaking the bank? Yes, you absolutely can.
One of the most reasonable lodging choices for families near Portland is the Pride Motel and Cottages in Scarborough Maine just a short drive from Portland. In Freeport Maine, a wonderful vacation town which is just a 15 minute drive from Portland, the Maine Idyll Motor Court might be a throw back to simpler times, but it's a comfortable and affordable place for a family to stay.
You can find lots to do in the area that'll cost very little or nothing at all. Take scenic walks on winding trails, catch a free concert in the park, head to the beach, visit some of Maine's prettiest lighthouses and much more. And with more than 300 restaurants in Portland alone, you can find affordable options for dining with the family.
Cheap Family Vacations in Southern Maine
When vacationing in Southern Maine, most people head to the popular towns of York, Ogunquit, Wells, the Kennebunks and Old Orchard Beach. For sure, these towns have the most to see and do, places to eat and wonderful places to stay. Off season rates in these towns make for a very affordable family vacation, but if you have school-aged kids and summer is the only option for your family vacation, I've found a few great places you might want to check out.
For accomodations, the Coast Village Inn and Cottages in Wells, Maine and N'er Beach Motel in Wells along with the Elmwood Motor Court in Old Orchard Beach provide affordable, family-friendly lodging options for your Southern Maine vacation. These places all allow for you to save money on food costs as well, as they all have options for cooking some of your own meals (even lobster dinners!).
There are also some reasonably priced restaurants in Southern Maine if you know how to pick them and lots of low cost and free activities too.
